How does a home battery work?
A home battery is an energy storage system for your home. It has two main functions:

Storage:
The battery stores electricity. This can be electricity generated by your solar panels that you do not use immediately. It can also store electricity drawn from the grid during lower-cost periods (off-peak hours). -
Usage
Later, when your solar panels generate too little electricity or when electricity prices are high, you can use the stored energy. This allows you to consume more of your own power or take advantage of electricity purchased at lower rates.
As a result, you make optimal use of your stored energy, reduce your dependence on the electricity grid, and lower your energy costs immediately.

How smart a home battery truly is depends largely on the quality and sophistication of the software and algorithms that manage the energy system.
More advanced batteries use artificial intelligence to predict future energy prices, account for weather conditions, and monitor your energy consumption. Combining a home battery with solar panels
Nowadays, it is possible to combine almost any type of solar panel system with a home battery. However, it is useful to know which type of home battery is best suited to your setup. Solar energy systems can generally be divided into three different categories:
With this type of solar power system, you will likely have an inverter installed in your attic, garage, or utility room. This is known as a string inverter. In this setup, all solar panels are connected together in a single series string.
With this type of solar power system, the (micro)inverters are installed on the roof directly beneath the solar panels. There is no central inverter located inside the home. This is known as a parallel system, where each solar panel operates independently. The most widely used microinverters are from brands such as Enphase and Hoymiles.
With this type of solar power system, you have a combination of the two setups described above. An optimizer is installed directly beneath each solar panel, and these optimizers are connected in parallel. They are then connected to a central inverter. The most widely used optimizers are from brands such as SolarEdge and Tigo.

All-in-one system
These are home batteries with an integrated inverter built into the battery system, allowing the entire setup to be housed in a single tower. This saves a significant amount of space. These systems are typically more advanced, but also slightly more expensive.
Home battery with a separate inverter
In this setup, there are two separate components: the home battery and a standalone hybrid inverter. The inverter is often from a different brand than the battery itself. Because the system consists of two components, it requires more space and does not include its own built-in energy management system (EMS). The advantage is that this configuration is usually somewhat more affordable.

Prepared for the phase-out of net metering
The current net metering scheme will end in 2027. From that point onward, feeding excess solar energy back into the grid will become less financially attractive. That is why it is important for solar panel owners to start storing their own electricity. By doing so, you can avoid feed-in charges and reduce or eliminate costs associated with exporting electricity to the grid.
At present, home battery prices remain in line with market expectations. However, many industry experts expect demand for home batteries to increase significantly once net metering is phased out in 2027, which could lead to higher prices. Home battery sales have already risen by 140% this year. Independent research firm DNE expects the market to grow even more rapidly in 2026.
